Nord – means “North” as Nth France

This photo was taken in 1914. In 1918, the town was taken by the Germans during the Battle of Flanders. It was later retaken by the Allies, but by then the town had been all but destroyed during the Battle of the Lys in April 1918.

These photos from the Australian War Memorial show the damage.
